Pregnancy Changes: What's Normal and When to Ask for Help
Pregnancy changes quickly. Understanding your body can help you know when to monitor something and when to speak with a professional.
Your pregnancy will not look exactly like anyone else's
One of the easiest traps during pregnancy is comparison. Someone else may have a beautiful bump at the same stage while yours looks completely different. Someone may have endless energy while you are exhausted. Someone may love pregnancy while you are finding parts of it surprisingly difficult.
Pregnancy affects people differently. Your symptoms can also change from week to week, which can make the whole experience feel unpredictable.
Instead of asking whether your pregnancy looks like someone else's, try asking whether the changes you are experiencing are something you should discuss with your healthcare provider.
Get curious about your body
Pregnancy is a good time to become more aware of your body without becoming anxious about every little sensation.
Notice patterns. If something is bothering you, write it down. Pay attention to whether it is improving, staying the same or becoming more intense.
You don't need to diagnose yourself. You simply need enough awareness to know when it is worth asking for professional advice.
Some changes deserve a conversation
Heavy bleeding, severe or persistent pain, severe headaches, sudden swelling, difficulty breathing, fainting, significant changes in fetal movement later in pregnancy, or vomiting that prevents you from keeping fluids down are examples of situations where you should seek medical advice promptly.
If you are unsure whether something is serious, it is okay to contact your healthcare provider and ask. You don't need to wait until you are certain something is wrong.
You are allowed to ask
Sometimes the hardest part is deciding whether you're 'overreacting'. But asking a question is not overreacting.
Your healthcare team would rather help you understand what is happening than have you sit at home worrying because you didn't want to bother anyone.
